Get Updates When This Shit Hits the Fan!

There are days when you wake up convinced you have everything figured out.

The coffee is hot.

The weather is perfect.

You’ve got a list.

A schedule.

A plan.

And then there’s a horse.

If you’ve spent any amount of time around horses, you already know where this story is headed.

The horse had a different plan.

Horses Have an Amazing Ability to Keep You Humble

One of the things I love most about horses is also the thing that drives me absolutely crazy.

They don’t care about your timeline.

They don’t care how many things you need to accomplish before lunch.

They don’t care that you watched three training videos and read two books before showing up.

They’re completely unimpressed with your agenda.

They simply respond to what you bring with you in that moment.

Your patience.

Your confidence.

Your frustration.

Your energy.

They’re honest like that.

The Plan Was Simple

It really was.

A quick ride.

Brush her down.

Clean the tack.

Maybe spend a few quiet minutes in the pasture before heading back to tackle the rest of the day.

Simple.

Reasonable.

Efficient.

Instead…

She decided the most interesting thing in the entire county was apparently happening somewhere over my left shoulder.

Her ears perked.

Her head lifted.

Mine followed.

For a split second, we were both looking in completely different directions.

Guess which one of us was right?

Not me.

You Can’t Out-Stubborn a Horse

Well…

You can try.

It just doesn’t usually end the way you hoped.

Somewhere along the way I realized I wasn’t actually trying to communicate anymore.

I was trying to win.

And horses have a funny way of exposing that.

The harder I pushed, the less either of us enjoyed what we were doing.

The moment I stopped trying to force the situation…

Everything softened.

She relaxed.

I relaxed.

And suddenly we were back on the same team.

Maybe That Applies to More Than Horses

It’s funny how often life works the same way.

We grip tighter.

Push harder.

Insist that our carefully crafted plan is the only acceptable outcome.

Meanwhile, life is quietly nudging us toward a better direction.

Not necessarily an easier one.

Just a better one.

Sometimes the detour becomes the story you tell for years.

Sometimes the thing that “went wrong” ends up becoming the thing you’re most grateful for.

My Favorite Part

When people ask why I love horses, they usually expect me to talk about riding.

The freedom.

The partnership.

The beauty.

And yes…

Those things are all true.

But what I really love is that horses make it impossible to fake anything.

You can’t pretend to be calm.

You can’t pretend to be present.

You can’t pretend to be paying attention.

They know.

Every single time.

They have a way of bringing you back to the moment whether you wanted to be there or not.

And honestly…

That’s a gift.

The Moral of the Story

That day, the horse absolutely had a better plan than I did.

My to-do list didn’t get finished.

The garage still needed cleaning.

Dinner was later than I intended.

But I laughed.

I slowed down.

I paid attention.

And I came home with a story instead of another checked box.

Looking back…

I’d choose the story every time.

Until Next Time…

Life has a funny habit of reminding us that we’re not in complete control.

Sometimes that reminder arrives in the form of a flat tire.

Sometimes it’s a thunderstorm.

And sometimes…

It’s a horse with a better idea.

I’ve learned to stop fighting those moments quite so hard.

After all, some of the best stories begin with the words:

“Well…that wasn’t the plan.”
