Here’s a cheap, easy way I came up with to hang those blankets out to dry. This is what you’ll need:
- Metal shelving brackets of choice from the hardware store (I chose the kind that are meant hold a closet rod underneath a shelf because you can’t ever have too many places to hang things when you have horses)
- 2×4 treated lumber
- Wood saw
- Sandpaper
- Bolts, washers, and nuts to attach your 2×4 to the bracket
- Screws to mount your blanket hanger once it’s finished
I cut my 2x4s into 2′ long pieces so I could have plenty of air circulation around one blanket or hang two on the same hanger. The 2×4 really only needs to be as long as your metal shelf bracket. I used a router to round all four long edges on the wood to keep the splinters out of me and the blankets, but sandpaper and elbow grease works, too.
Next, drill pilot holes to mount your wood onto the bracket and sand the whole piece of wood. I put urethane on mine because I knew they would be exposed to the elements. After you’ve got the piece of 2×4 exactly like you want it, mound it to the metal bracket using the bolts, nuts, and washers. I chose bolts that had a round head so nothing would snag or catch on them. Washers are a good idea because they disperse the pressure made by the bolt and the nut and you can get them tighter. Now all that’s left to do is hang them up! Be sure to hang them high enough that your blankets aren’t dragging the ground. I put eye hooks on either side of mine to attach bungee cords to in case the wind picks up. Putting them on a south facing wall will catch a lot of the sun and dry them faster! Enjoy!
